Betula Alba

Betula alba

Birch

Both birches and alders, the closest relations, are light trees of the marginal zones of forests, adapted to poor soils and extreme conditions of moist ground and drought. Birches are the most rustic of all the trees with wide leaves.

In autumn, the birch leaves take a golden hue, the purest of all kinds of trees. The best is to plant it at the bottom of dark conifers where the paleness of the trunk will stand out under the cascade of its brilliant foliage.

To look better the birch bark should be planted in-group and not isolated.

The Betula pendula , silver birch of weeping aspect, lives in sandy grounds, especially in Scotland.
