Allepo Pine It is a widely extended tree of the Mediterranean region, forming clear forests on superficial soils, where in other times there were oaks. Like the kermes, it is as invasive specie of poor soils, particularly on limestone. It is associated with typical Mediterranean thickets of perennial shrubs, reaching a height of 20 m. It has gray-silver bark when it is young and little by little turns brown-reddish when getting old. The leaves are very green, flexible and narrow, of 6-15 cm long and 1 mm wide. The fruits or strobilae are 5-12 cm. Conic-round shaped, lustrous brown, with thick arched peduncles. It is found in rocky places and littoral hills. The bark is used to tan; the poor quality wood is used in rustic constructions. |
