Pino negro japonés

Japanese Black Pine

The Japanese black pine can be compared to the black pines of Europe, particularly the Corsica pine. It was revealed as the best tree shaken by the littoral wind of New England. A sandy and poor soil does not cause damage to the pine, it slowly forms a crown of extremely long branches, on which dark-leaf patches develop, which gives the opportunity, evidently not disregarded by the Japanese, to obtain theatrical effects.

The trees, Editorial BLUME, Hugh Johnson, page 75.

It is a Japanese pine up to 40m, with a diameter of 2m; it produces quite valuable wood and is also tapped to obtain resin.

In other countries, especially in Australia, it is planted as littoral windbreak and to fix sandy areas.

Its main botanic characteristics are the small cones of 3-6cm long, which form big groups up to 40 or 50.

The needles, by pairs of 7-10cm long, are densely grouped over the twigs with the points outwards.

Encyclopedia BLUME, Trees, wood and forests of the world, H. Edlin/M.Nimmo, page 126.

Origin: selected seeds from Japan.

It has twisted branches and irregular crown.

Foliage: brilliant, green-gray.
